Well, as a student I don't have the biggest rig of them all, but currently I'm managing fine with my Roland FP-4:

It is a great stage piano with a lot of great sounds and stuff Smiley

But I'm also saving up for the Nord Electro 73..

This is what I used in our Church...

And this is what I used in my house

For all the KB I like Roland Fantom because they have great Piano sound, second is the YAMAHA MOTIF for elecric piano sound, third is the Korg for all synth sound..

My first post.

I've been a long-time Korg user. I now use this:

Korg M3-73

Sheer joy to play.

hey everyone,
im trying to get a keyboard, and it seems that M-audio has a "weighted" midi-controller called Keystation Pro 88.

I went into Guitar Center the other day and tried it out.. the keys feel very unnatural, as it feels weighted to the push, but once it is mid-way through, they key gives out and feel's very awkward (comapared to a nord that was sitting right next to it, i compared the key sensitivity)

Yet, for 400$ (which i can get for a real low price for used off someone), i feel as if this is the only full size key with decent keys.

I'll be using it to do various of midi stuff, lay drum tracks, synths, all through my Imac.  But i do want to learn how to play the piano, so i want something that's weighted so i can also play classical.  Anyone's opinion on this keyboard, and maybe suggestions as to what other keyboard i may look into with a price range of around 200?

thanks!
cheers

Hi irjoe,

I’ve never played on an M-audio keyboard, but I hear only bad things about the actual keys. I would advise you to ask on a musicians forum. I am sure I read somewhere that there are good midi keyboards in this price range.

I own a Keystation 88es.  What drew me to it, was the keys are semi-weighted, meaning they're heavier than the "synth-action,", but the return is really fast, so I can use it for more than just a piano.  The nicest feeling keys, in my opinion, go to the 20+ year-old Kurzweil Midiboard controller.  I owned one prior to getting the M-Audio, and it was the closest thing to a real piano I could get, because of its real wooden keys.  Alas, I traded it for the M-Audio just because the Midiboard was a beast, weighing in at a whopping 80+ lbs., probably heavier.

As far as piano action is concerned, it's a matter of personal opinion.  My suggestion is try a bunch of different models, and see which feels right to you.

justin, what do you do mostly with the keystation?
I can get some really cheap locally on craigslist, but I dont know if i should get the keystation ES or the Axiom series..

I'm not a key player, but i do want to learn how, and I want a midi controller to lay down drum tracks and such, and the keystation seem to be a cheap solution for it (since i've recently bought an amplifier, i dont want to spend more hard $)

The Axiom series offer more assignable controls than the Keystation 88es, but they have the same action.  If you're not too concerned about not having a full 88-note instrument, go with the Axiom, the biggest one available is the 61-note model.  It also has MPC-style pads on it--great for doing drum tracks.

I use the Keystation in conjunction with a laptop runing Reason 4.  I like having a full 88-note keyboard, but I would still like a control surface.  And, the 88es happened to be in my budget.

I use a Casio CDP-100, I'm very impressed with the sound and feel of this keyboard, especially because it was $400, it has weighted keys and hammer action, pretty sweet keyboard I like it. here's a link if you want to see some more specifications
