Witnesses to the crucifixion - #2 Mary Magdalene

"There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene?" (New King James Version)
Mark 15:40a

We know little about Mary Magdalene but we do know that she witnessed the cruel death of the man who'd changed her life. Luke tells us that she was one of the women that Jesus had healed and from whom he had cast out evil spirits. In Mary's case it was seven demons, a fact that Luke must have included in his historical record to underline the seriousness of her condition. Be that as it may, surely we can identify with her horror and sorrow at seeing the terrible suffering of the man who'd done so much to help her and others. Looking at Jesus, Mary Magdalene didn't just see an innocent victim upon the cross; she saw her health, her sanity and her self-respect. She had discovered that Jesus alone is the bridge between the wretchedness of the human condition and the glory of God's mercy and love.
