Def under $300.
And like something with an electronic feel.
And no, not really. Just color.

well starting out its best to get a used guitar (local guitar shop or guitar center, craigslist)
theyre cheaper than buying new and they might even be better because they have been cared for and set up correctly
i wouldnt suggest buying on the internet, you have to play the guitar, make sure it feels right and fits you well

also dont spend all the money on a guitar, you need other things:
an amp, you need to hear yourself
a chord to connect the amp, a little obvious
a case or stand, or both you dont want your guitar getting hurt
strings, when you play you might break a few
picks, really cheap but needed, dont use anything else (no coins)
lessons?? are you learning from a book? internet videos? person??

Ibanez makes a good electric that's fairly priced.

Whatever you do - don't get a squier-copy. They're rubbish.

No, they don?t have to be. They have greater quality fluctuation than Fenders. That?s why you should always play the guitar before you buy it. If you have a friend who plays guitar, have him testplay for you.

you can get one and put $400 bucks of someone else working on it and have it sound and feel like one that cost more than $1000

except for the fact that they are only useful if you put a distortion after it, or with a wah also.

clean sound, rubbish.
versatility, what versatility?

try playing anything other then rock on it and you will find it to be rubbish.
