Fellow members, It has been now more than a month since the Christian Downloads Community Website got back online (running and kicking). We would like to let you know that since that day we are actively looking into possible solutions that will make the Website more solid and we are trying to find ways that can reduce the big and immediate risk of a future downtime/shutting down which would mean the end of the download service and can very easily lead to the ultimate death of the Community. We believe that the wisest move right now in order to deal with both of these issues is to move the website to another country and to its own dedicated server. We have to say though that such a home is quite costly. We do not know the exact price yet but our calculations are talking about an approximate of $120/month. We would like to ask you to pray, put aside the amount of money you are saving each month by being able to check stuff out without buying it if it is not worth it, and consider donating some of that money towards the cause of keeping the Christian Downloads Community Website alive. p.s. We do not want anyone to feel any kind of obligation, but we feel that being clear and honest in front of you, is the way to go.

This place needs a backup plan - like a section on another secular downloads site that's friendly to file sharing that's for meeting up if this site ever goes down.

I've been using tehPARADOX for nigh on two years now. I've found some Christian music on there?Relient K or Jars of Clay or Project 86, for example?but not much. As far as I can tell people don't care what content's posted as long as you code the links, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the site, but I feel that torrent sites such as CT which is not BtW are much safer. Plus the community still exists apart from just downloads.

I whole heartedly agree with moving the server to a separate country. I do not receive a monthly paycheck, but when I begin again in the summer, I will gladly set aside money to keep the community going.

That would be wrong. Organisations are tracking down hosts who provide torrent downloads and taking them to court (namely Brien in the NL).

$120/month!?! Where are you guys pulling this number from? Well, the squirrels turning the squirrel cages at the back need food. Then the admins need their share of dough. Then they need money for the actual server. Thus total = $120

Let me clarify that of that money not a cent goes in our pockets and not a cent goes for any personal use! Instead we personally have been and will keep giving money for this site to run.
Part of the reason the cost is so high, is because we're looking for a dedicated server and the rest is because we need it to be located in a country where the goverment doesn't actively apply copyright laws. The latest part is what makes all the difference between this solution and a cheap US box.

but I feel that torrent sites such as CT which is not BtW are much safer. That would be wrong. Organisations are tracking down hosts who provide torrent downloads and taking them to court (namely Brien in the NL). Torrents are considerably less "safe" from being tracked down then direct http downloads, because torrents make your IP address public while a complainer would need to subpoena your IP address to get it from a direct download site like the kind used here. Don't get me wrong - both are subject to tracking. But torrents are considerably easier to track. Also, many ISPs are looking at simply blocking torrent access the way many college campuses already have due partly to the copyright concerns ( a recent census says 99% of files shared on the torrent protocol are probably copyright infringing, though I think their sample is disproportionately small) but also because they think it will save them money by reducing bandwidth demand. Of course I don't think either of these arguments justify blocking an internet protocol, but the bottom line is that for relatively less popular stuff like Christian media, direct download sites are probably the best solution which is accessible to everything that we've got right now. With an updated jDownloader package, you can get most of the convenience that torrent clients offer, so I think the many advantages of direct download sites outweigh the advantages of torrents in this case.

I've been thinking and praying hard about this and I keep coming back to the same question for which I'm hard pressed to find an answer: what is so special about this site that I should make a contribution for its upkeep?
In my general observations thus far I've come across dead links, requests for re-ups falling on blind eyes (even though others have no doubt downloaded & could easily share), snatch & run and a general sense of ingratitude to the uploaders (from my personal experience). Please don't think this an attack on the site, it is merely what I have seen so far.
I so much want to contribute but at the moment am having a difficult time justifying why I should.

Your question is justified and the arguments you present here are valid to some extend.
However I still believe that the availability of this material to as many people as possible is way more important than creating a "nice" atmosphere (which don't get me wrong isn't bad at all). So the reason this site should (or shouldn't) stay alive, is primarily to serve people like me and you: sinners. So whoever believes that it DOES serve people and has the ability, desire, and guidance to do so, he's more than welcome to go ahead and donate now, tomorrow, whenever and for as long as the site keeps serving.

I'd imagine that it'd be something like: CPU: Something like a Core2Duo or AMD64 X2 or even Pentium 4 would do RAM: Anything over a gig Hard disk: 120-250GB would be fine, although I'd imagine that much less would be actually needed Bandwidth: 1000-2000GB should be more than sufficient.

Meh, don't blame this site for dead links - it's built into the way the world is right now that these kinds of links will go dead now and then and have to be reuploaded. Maybe if there wasn't so much downtime on the site, people would be more inclined to upload stuff more often and your issue would go away.
